Here is the summary of Peter Bishop’s life:
1. Peter was born with a genetic disease and he was certain to die; but his genius father found a cure for his disease. However, a guy coming from a distant future showed up and distracted his father; so the cure was spoiled and he was certain to die again. But then a different version of his father coming from another universe kidnapped him and took him to his universe in order to heal him. Unfortunately on their way home he fell through ice in a lake and he would definitely drown, if the guy from the distant future didn’t show up again and save him.
Now try telling this story to a stranger.
2. Finally he was healed and he could live in that alternate universe with alternate versions of his father and mother. But then his mother killed herself and his father went crazy, ending up in a mental institution. So he left his education and became a nomad; he spent his 20s conning people, gambling and escaping the mafia.
Did you notice how “escaping the mafia” sounded trivial?
3. Then he was contacted by an FBI agent and learned that his father was in fact Dr. Frankenstein, and all of the horror and sci-fi stories were true. He spent 2 years trying to save the world and surviving several near-death experiences while he was babysitting his crazy father. When he finally became close with his father and started to develop true feelings for his partner, he found out that he wasn’t from this universe and the man he called dad had kidnapped him.
Did you notice how “saving the world and surviving near-death experiences” sounded trivial this time?
4. He went to his original universe but only to find out that his real father was using him to destroy the universe he lived in. When he learned that his partner was feeling the same way with him he decided to go back; however the woman he loves was kidnapped and her alternate version took her place pretending to be her. She fooled him for months and then ran away carrying his child.
Actually, having 3 minutes of real happiness was an improvement for him here.
5. After the woman he loves returned, he had to wait until she forgave him although he was a victim too. And when finally they were together, his child who was never supposed to exist in the other universe was used to activate a machine that would destroy their universe. He had to activate the machine on this side to stop it, knowing that he could die. The machine took him to the future and he saw that the woman he loves would die and both universes would be destroyed eventually. So when he came back he sacrificed himself so that he would die in his childhood and none of these would happen.
And you thought death was the worst thing that could happen, right?
6. Well, he didn’t just die; but his existence was erased. He somehow managed to come back in his physical form, beating all known laws of physics. But everything was different now and nobody could remember him. For months he tried to get back home; but in the end he understood that he was home, and the woman he loves finally remembered him although no one else did. He was still okay with it; however an evil man who had been killed by him in the previous timeline was alive now and about to destroy both universes.
Not to mention that he was the only one who volunteered to enter the mind of the guy coming from a distant future, knowing that he was likely to die if he did so; because that guy had said that the woman he loves would die.
7. Then, we saw the future of this timeline and learned that they were able to stop the evil man; but 4 years later those guys coming from a distant future had invaded the world. He had been amberized for 20 years and woke up to this doomed world, where something had happened to his wife and his daughter was 24 years old now.
We couldn’t see those 4 years that he lived happily with his family; because it’s against the laws of the universe, you know. Nobody should ever see Peter Bishop as happy for a long time.
——————
None of the other characters in the story suffered even close to this. Yet, people begin to say “oh poor baby” when someone else dies, loses someone he or she loves, has a single near-death experience, or simply becomes heartbroken. This is a usual day in Peter’s life. But while others keep complaining about things; he acts cool, and even smiles talking about his crappy experiences.
Walter may be the smartest, Olivia may be the strongest, and other characters may have their strong suits; but Peter is the most heroic one. No one deserved happiness as much as him.
